Recommended Repair Procedures
Molten Metal Transfer Piping

- Remove metal residue and remainder of original refractory liner.
- Inspect to assure that residue of refractory cement, if any, is
not sufficient to obstruct insertion of new liner. A wire brush,
putty knife or similar tool can be used.
- Place steel pipe or steel elbow in rigid fixture such as a common
table vise. Straight sections of steel pipe should be placed
approximately horizontal and elbows should be placed as shown above.
Do not clamp tight enough to distort pipe.
- Insert dry ceramic liner into pipe or elbow to assure that liner
can be installed with minimum effort. Excessive clearance between
liner and pipe is preferable to a tight fit since liner will swell
during Step 6. Course sandpaper can be used to remove high spots
in liner or to reduce liner O.D.
- Stir supply of H.T.S. ceramic cement to consistent thickness.
Small amounts of clean water may be added and thoroughly stirred to
a good working consistency.
- Place a clean large neck container directly under the entrance end
of the steel elbow or steel extension to be relined. Insert this
end into the steel pipe or elbow and insert liner completely into
the steel while pouring H.T.S. ceramic cement around the liner as
it enters the steel. Position the liner with equal amounts of
excess protruding from both ends.
- Allow relined pipe to dry thoroughly, using a hot or warm area if
available.
- Saw off protruding liner flush with flanges and paint sawed surfaces
with H.T.S. ceramic cement. Work H.T.S. ceramic cement into any void
between liner and steel pipe.
- Allow finished assembly to dry thoroughly using an oven or hot area
if available. Caution: Moisture and molten metal are an extreme
hazard! Assembled pipe must be dry and preferably warm to the touch
prior to use for molten metal transfer.
